There are many words that describe Minna no Mori Gifu Media Cosmos: a library, art gallery, cultural hub, and architectural wonder to name a few. The facility is located in Gifu City in between JR Gifu Station and Gifu Castle, and the structural design alone is worth a visit (as it was designed by world-renowned architect Toyo Ito).
Minna no Mori, or “everyone’s forest” in Japanese, was chosen to be part of the official name in order to illustrate the facility’s ties to the community and surrounding forests. While the design of the facility is very contemporary, the use of wood in the lattice work for the ceiling, the rest of the building, and the trees in the landscaping tie it back to the forest theme (and a more traditional Japanese-style of architecture).
Gifu Media Cosmos is divided into three different subsections, each serving its own distinct purpose. The Fumu Fumu Area functions as the Gifu City Chuo (Central) Library, and the Doki Doki Area hosts cultural events and art exhibits. The Wai Wai Area is home to a community hub that houses the Community Activity Exchange Center and Multicultural Plaza. Here community members can participate in a number of activities ranging from weekly language classes (Tagalog, Portuguese, Chinese, English, and Japanese), to daily seasonal activities that change every other month or so. There is even free counseling available in all the above languages.
Some other features/services that might be of interest are an in-house Starbucks and Lawsons, a terrace with a great view of nearby Gifu Castle on Mt. Kinka, and free wifi provided throughout the entire building.
Whether you live in Gifu or just happen to be traveling through, this is a place that you don’t want to overlook. Connect with the local community, relax and read a book, or just submerse yourself in the one-of-a-kind architecture, there is plenty to experience at Gifu Media Cosmos.
